Blogs

PhotographyBLOG - started life in January 2003 with the sole purpose of being a weblog about photography. It is run by professional photographer Mark Goldstein and the site aims to report on the latest photography news, both film and digital, both global and UK-based; to offer opinion on that news from the unique perspective of Mark Goldstein, and to allow you to add your comments on that news and opinion; to review digital cameras, printers, scanners, software and books; and to provide a meeting place for photographers of all abilities.

Great Photographers - Has your latest masterpiece been savaged by the circle critics? Find solace in this hilarious blog, where Mike Johnston imagines what armchair critics would make of some of the world's greatest photographs. Of course, we wouldn't write anything like this, would we???

Photoblogs Magazine. - "A blog is basically a web page consisting of posts organized in chronological order (usually with the most recent post first) and updated on a regular basis. Blogs are used for a variety of reasons from an artistic medium to an online journal to a corporate communications tool - the options are endless." Fairly obviously, photoblogs add photographs to this basic formula. 'Photoblog Magazine' is an online publication created specifically to showcase the work of photobloggers from around the world.



Magazines - Paper and OnLine

"Pinhole Visions" - The Art of Pinhole Photography - An on-line magazine dedicated to Pinhole Photography. Contains advice, technique, galleries and news. Currently Volume 11 No 7.

Lens Culture - 'Lens Culture is an international online magazine celebrating contemporary photography, art, media, and world cultures. Lens Culture features the work of photographers from all continents and various points of view: documentary, fine art, photojournalism, lyrical, poetic, personal, abstract, human, and street photography. Discover well-written essays, analysis and criticism about photography and culture, as well as audio interviews with photographers, reviews of exhibitions, and our new section of photo book reviews. Lens Culture attracts visitors from more than 100 countries..' Quoted from their homepage.


Double Exposure - a monthly online magazine rich in pictures and editorial content. Other features include contests and a 'Pictures to Inspire' feature.

Time Magazine's 'Best Photos of the Year, 2006' - The title says it all!

Frank Van Riper. - Frank Van Riper writes for the Washington Post's photography website called Camera Works. Usually interesting, informative and entertaining, his latest column can be found by clicking on his name and there are archives of many of his recent columns HERE and his earlier ones HERE.

Amateur Photographer - Amateur Photographer is the world’s oldest consumer weekly photographic magazine, first published on October 10 1884.

ArtDaily.com - Artdaily describes itself as 'The First Art Newspaper on the Net'. With extensive sections on Photographs and Photography, this is an interesting and rewarding site.

Lenswork Magazine - American photography magazine, notable for the quality of its reproduction and its contributors.

SEESAW - SEESAW is an online photography magazine established in 2004. Currently showing its second issue, it contains several interesting photographic essays.

foto 8 - The online presence of ei8ht magazine, foto 8 publishes 'challenging and socially aware photo stories that extend the boundaries of traditional story telling'.

ePHOTOzine - A web-based magazine aimed at all photographers but with an emphasis on digital imaging and equipment reviews.

OnLine Photography - A new online photography magazine whose stated goal is "to present images and information to thrill and inspire all of us who EAT, BREATHE, and SLEEP photography." Product reviews, articles of interest and links to some good contemporary photography are available.

LIFE Magazine - The TIME Magazine Group has re-launched of one of the most venerable magazine titles in the world, LIFE. At the same time, LIFE's website has been re-launched with a new design to support these new titles and give users access to many of the classic features of LIFE magazine.

Sight Photography Magazine - Fine Photography Online - the website of Sight, "the online magazine for some of the world's finest photography. . . we strive to give exposure to photographers of all levels. We emphasize content and the creative process over the nuts-and-bolts of technique."

ReVue Photography Magazine - Eight French photographers (and occasional guests) collaborate to produce theme-based feature exhibits accompanied by individual artist's portfolios. Beautifully designed, well laid out, and rich with images and content. In French - but the pictures speak a universal language!



Other Sites of Interest

Hubblesite - Set aside plenty of time for this one! O.K., so the Hubble Space Telescope is a pretty amazing piece of kit which you won't find in your local branch of Jessops but, even so, the pictures on this site are truly amazing. Lots to explore - if you'll forgive the pun!

Colour Perception - Learn something about colour perception by viewing these three amazing illusions.

Inversnaid Photography Workshops - Inversnaid describes itself as: "a photographic retreat where, free of distractions, you can concentrate on your own photography, exchange ideas with fellow photographers and work with renowned artists." A photography centre recommended by one of our members.

Photography courses and coaching with Philip Dunn - former travel photographer with The Sunday Times. Those of you who enjoy photography courses might like to check out this site for courses based in Kirkcudbright.

Skye in Focus - photographic holidays and gallery, based in Broadford, Isle of Skye

DIY Print Washer - Always wanted a print washer, but could never justify the cost? Have a look at this DIY alternative designed by Peter Bryenton.

Photograph America - Visiting America anytime soon? This site will show you how to make the best of your photographic time in the wonderful, varied landscape which forms the U.S.A. "Photograph America Newsletter is a 12- to 16-page travel newsletter, published bi-monthly since 1989. Each issue describes in detail where to photograph North American landscapes, wildlife, hidden waterfalls, slot canyons, wildlife migrations, and much more information. Learn where, when, and how to discover the best nature photography in America."

TrekEarth - "The underlying theme of TrekEarth is learning more about the world through photography. TrekEarth fosters this by allowing photographers to display their work grouped by regions in a supportive and orderly environment. This is accomplished by an easy-to-use system which encourages people to critique each other's work."

Adobe Acrobat Reader - Adobe's free software for viewing PDF files (Adobe Portable Document Format.)

Diego Goldberg - On June 17th, every year, the family of Diego Golberg, who lives and works in Buenos Aires, goes through a private ritual: they photograph themselves "to stop a fleeting moment, the arrow of time passing by." A simple concept, yet it produces a compelling and fascinating photographic exercise which seems to transcend the mere record it purports to be.

The Shutterbug Magazine Radio Site - Something a little different this month. This is the radio site of the well known American photography magazine "Shutterbug". Content is shown in the page's left hand column, and there are archives to explore.

MultiMap - Not a photographic site, but a jolly useful one anyway, with on-line, printable, scalable maps to help you find your way to that next photo venue!
